When "Soap" Goes Wild!
Hey guys!
I guess this journal is a very good topic for what happened today (08/02/2008) in the chemistry lab! Most of my room 1 students already know about this, but I'll share this experience with you guys from other classes.
A. Nantanit told us that we had to hand in some soap made by ourselves! The equation for making soap is "Fat + NaOH -----> Soap + Glycerol" With this equation, we need some animal oil or plant oil and some sodium hydroxide. Because it was hard to find sodium hydroxide by ourselves, we used the school's one. So, we arranged a 0th period within our class to start making some soap in chemistry lab supervised by P' Fai.
After trying many ratios of oil, sodium hydroxide, and alcohol, we decided to try a formula from one of the website. It said something like this. "Mix some animal oil with water in a beaker. Then heat it to sterilize the animal oil, so you will get a clean bar of soap. bla bla bla" So, we followed the direction carefully. We used an electric heater to heat our mixture. Everything sounds fine, right? I'll remind you of something.
Let's say you're frying a fish in a very hot oil in a frying pan. Suddenly, you accidentally dropped some drops of water into that pan. What would happen? Some oil in the pan will burst, right? ... Ha ha, I guess now you all realize how this formula of making soap makes our lab goes wild! Yes, after we heat our mixture for a while, the water boils beneath the layer of oil! Imagine 200 ml of oil meets with 200 ml of water in a 100 C beaker! What do you get?
Handmade Fireworks! Boom!
The mixture in the whole beaker exploded many times, shooting out a lot of burnt oil everywhere and some smoke as well! Gosh, this is even better than dumping in a chunk of sodium in water! But eew, it smells like we're raising pigs in that chemistry lab! 555+ Finally after the beaker stopped exploding, we had only 10 ml of sterile oil left in the beaker. So, if we need 100 ml of sterile oil in this process, how much more oil and water do we need, and how much worse can the explosion be? Do the math, but I guess you wouldn't want to be in that lab watching that beaker! 555+
Later on in the day, we managed to finish making our liquid soap after spending so many hours in that stinky lab. So, that is how can an ordinary lab goes wild when the scientists are us! Wow, what a day in the lab!
Thanks for the comments, guys!
