When "Soap" Goes Wild!

@ 10:19 PM (6 months, 22 days ago)

Hey guys!

I guess this journal is a very good topic for what happened today (08/02/2008) in the chemistry lab! Most of my room 1 students already know about this, but I'll share this experience with you guys from other classes.

A. Nantanit told us that we had to hand in some soap made by ourselves! The equation for making soap is "Fat + NaOH -----> Soap + Glycerol" With this equation, we need some animal oil or plant oil and some sodium hydroxide. Because it was hard to find sodium hydroxide by ourselves, we used the school's one. So, we arranged a 0th period within our class to start making some soap in chemistry lab supervised by P' Fai.

After trying many ratios of oil, sodium hydroxide, and alcohol, we decided to try a formula from one of the website. It said something like this. "Mix some animal oil with water in a beaker. Then heat it to sterilize the animal oil, so you will get a clean bar of soap. bla bla bla" So, we followed the direction carefully. We used an electric heater to heat our mixture. Everything sounds fine, right? I'll remind you of something.

Let's say you're frying a fish in a very hot oil in a frying pan. Suddenly, you accidentally dropped some drops of water into that pan. What would happen? Some oil in the pan will burst, right? ... Ha ha, I guess now you all realize how this formula of making soap makes our lab goes wild! Yes, after we heat our mixture for a while, the water boils beneath the layer of oil! Imagine 200 ml of oil meets with 200 ml of water in a 100 C beaker! What do you get?

Handmade Fireworks! Boom!

The mixture in the whole beaker exploded many times, shooting out a lot of burnt oil everywhere and some smoke as well! Gosh, this is even better than dumping in a chunk of sodium in water! But eew, it smells like we're raising pigs in that chemistry lab! 555+ Finally after the beaker stopped exploding, we had only 10 ml of sterile oil left in the beaker. So, if we need 100 ml of sterile oil in this process, how much more oil and water do we need, and how much worse can the explosion be? Do the math, but I guess you wouldn't want to be in that lab watching that beaker! 555+

Later on in the day, we managed to finish making our liquid soap after spending so many hours in that stinky lab. So, that is how can an ordinary lab goes wild when the scientists are us! Wow, what a day in the lab!

Thanks for the comments, guys!

CU Intania Open House

@ 07:58 PM (6 months, 25 days ago)

Hey All!

I was going through all your comments you gave me. Thank you so much! Because I would like to give some other things to read, maybe it's time to write my next journal.

Last Saturday (02/02/2008), I went to the 3rd CU Intania Open House to learn more about the four INTERNATIONAL engineering faculties. Before I went there, I wasn't so sure if I should continue my post high school education in Nano or ICE faculty there because my interest was computer technology and software. Now, these are what I have learnt from the open house!

1. Nano focuses more on the material and its properties, and how to improve it by playing around with atomic or molecular structure. So, it involved more chemistry and biology than I expected. It really has nothing to do with developing software like what I thought!

2. ICE (Information and Communication Engineering) emphasizes a lot on all kinds of communication technology, mainly computer programs and softwares with some minor hardware. This faculty is the combination of Computer Engineering, Electricity Engineering, and Industrial Management Engineering. Computers and softwares are important here!

So, I think I know which faculty I like best. It's ICE, and hopefully I'll be able to get accepted and study there. I only have to pick up the CU-ATS test to finish preparing myself for the admission. If I get good scores, I'll have a really good shot at being awarded a 50% or even 100% scholarship! We'll see how my life goes. Hopefully I'll do well in the CU-ATS test. Wish me good luck! ^_^

Once again, thank you for all of your comments! I'll surely reply you back at your blog or webboard.

My Busy Friday

@ 01:29 PM (6 months, 27 days ago)

Hello all!

Finally I have something to write about! It was about my recent Friday (Feb 3, 2008).

In the morning, I and other Oliver Twist performance team went to Queen Sirikit Conventional Hall to perform Oliver Twist again for one last time (hopefully). I'm quite bored of acting the same thing over and over again. Okay, we won the competition and we should only need to perform it to Princess Somsawali as our last performance. I didn't really see anyone who paid close attention to our performance at QSCH at all. Besides, we didn't have enough microphones, so most of the audiences couldn't hear what we said anyway. Well, it was nice to get away from school in the morning though (but not very nice for me having to catch up with all the missed quizzes!)

After I was back to school, I had club period a.k.a. "free period!" So, I and my friends just played "slave" for the whole two periods. lol That was lots of fun! Besides, I got some flowers from my M6 friends too! Thank you Tanya, Kae, Pao, and Oor! I wish you could know and read this blog.

Later in the same day, I and Oliver Team went to Oishi Express in Major Cineplex Pinklao for a dinner buffet sponsored by our kind and gentle school's principal! Holy cow! There were 45 of us there which cost him about 14000 baht to pay for this meal! O_O Actually, it was quite cheap considering the fact that it costs 500 baht for each person. (I'm not really sure if it's 500 baht per person) We had a really great time there. While we were having that meal, "Great" had some funny idea. He put some Wasabi in an ice cream bowl and covered it with green tea ice cream. Then he gave it to "Pong." Poor Pong, who didn't know that what lay under that ice cream was spicy Wasabi, scooped up a huge chunk of Wasabi and ate it! lol He went crazy looking for water after that!

When we finished with the meal, I, Champ, Sense, Boom, Bomb, Pong, and Great decided to go for karaoke for one more hour! We basically sang like crazy, especially the last two songs. I finally came home at about 9.15 PM. What a day!

See you later in the next blog! Thanks for all the comments!
